Ruble Share in Russia's Export Settlements Tops 50% for the First Time

Ruble payments for Russian exports reached a record 52.3% in April 2025, up 11.9 percentage points year on year, according to Bank of Russia data reviewed by RIA Novosti and published by Prime. Every world region increased its ruble share, with Africa reaching 98.3%, while payments in unfriendly currencies fell to a record low of 14.1%.

The share of the ruble in settlements for Russian exports exceeded 50% for the first time in April 2025, while the weight of unfriendly currencies collapsed to a historic minimum, according to Bank of Russia data reviewed by RIA Novosti and published by the Prime news agency on 16 June 2025.

Ruble payments for Russia's export deliveries rose in April to a record 52.3% — an increase of 11.9 percentage points compared with the same month a year earlier. Countries in every region of the world began paying more in rubles for Russian goods and services.

Record ruble shares across all major regions

The strongest annual growth in the ruble's share was recorded among African countries, up 37.7 percentage points to 98.3%, and across the American continent, up 33.7 percentage points to 55.6%. For all four of the regions below, the April ruble share of payments for goods and services supplied from Russia became the highest on record:

Over the past year, Caribbean countries also paid in rubles more frequently for Russian goods and services: the share of such payments grew by 8.7 percentage points to 95%. The weight of ruble transactions rose in Europe as well, by 4.3 percentage points to 62.8%.

Unfriendly currencies at a historic low

At the same time, payments in unfriendly currencies for Russian goods and services fell to a record low of 14.1%, although a year earlier their share stood at 19.3%. In a number of regions the figure dropped to the lowest level in modern history: in the Americas to 42.3%, in Asia to 12.2%, and in Africa to just 1%.

Finally, the share of friendly currencies contracted to 33.6% from 40.3% a year earlier. They account for the largest proportion of settlements for Russian goods among Asian countries at 38.9%, while in all other regions their share is below 10%.
