Amazon has said it is suspending work with the firm that operated a cargo plane involved in a fatal crash in Miami this month, a decision the company described as part of its review of the surrounding circumstances. The announcement follows an incident in which five people were killed and five others injured when a cargo jet overshot a runway at Miami International Airport.
The decision
"After the tragic incident last weekend, we've spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances, and we've decided to pause our operations with 21 Air," an Amazon spokesperson said. The company's spokesperson Kelly Nantel added that safety has always been the top priority, whether in the company's own operations or when working with partners, and that Amazon will continue to support the investigation and everyone affected.
The crash
On 6 September, a Boeing 767-300 cargo plane operated by 21 Air overshot a runway at Miami International Airport after departing from Luis Munoz Marin International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, striking several vehicles before skidding to a stop. Five people were killed and five others were injured. The US National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation and has recovered the flight recorders. Early findings indicated that a pilot on board noted the aircraft was going too fast before it overshot the runway, and that one pilot warned the other about the excessive speed without a consistent verbal response, even as an altitude alarm sounded.
